Hear the howls of the wolves my brethren,
Calling out on all hallows night.
Come let’s sup with them my brethren,
So we might join them for a bite.

Download the original Dracula movie! Well, the director had to make a couple of very minimal changes from the original story because the studio couldn’t get the rights, but the story is oh-so-close to the book – Jonathan Harker is still called Jonathan Harker and Stoker’s wife sued the studio into oblivian. Now we get the real thing piped into our computer! FOR FREE!! And it is completely legit as the movie is open source. How sweet is that!
Originally released in 1922 as Nosferatu, Eine Symphonie Des Grauens, director F.W. Munarau’s chilling and eerie adaption of Stoker’s Dracula is a silent masterpiece of terror which to this day is the most striking and frightening portrayal of the legend.
Okay, enough chatter, download Nosferatu NOW!
This site now runs with PostNuke, a content management system using a MySQL database. Sounds great huh? Well, it’s not half bad, but there’s work to do and this area is where I’ll post updates up to and beyond February 1st. A lot of work has gone into getting it looking a bit like the old JP Goth (‘coz I like that basic design), but it’s got a long way to go. Anyway, tonight was Calendar/Events night.
Tonight’s work was on reworking part of the Calendar/Events section. The section was basicly working, but was having trouble fitting in my 800×600, produced black text on a black background in the Year view and had a few other minor niggly issues.
Filching through code is not one of my fortes and filching through code across several files is not my idea of a fun Friday night. Still it made sense and the files with the central navigation information in them were found. It took a few minutes to break the central navigation up, but finding the right files took an hour or so. So now Events seems to be small-screen friendly (although that navigation has gotten quite tall…).
The other part was a rather humorous Year view where all the numbers were black. Not bad unless the background is black too. Again, it was following the templates to the right part and updating the colors. Add another 20 minutes working out how to update the data in the system (replacing smarty cache – don’t laugh – did the trick). However, there’s something still amiss in the Year view – it doesn’t pick up the Event days. I’m too tired to look scrounge through the logic of Events now, so the annual calendar page is going to be pretty uninformative. The Month, Day and Event views work fine and input is relatively easy. Design-wise, it’s still an ugly duckling, but at this stage I’m not going to be too upset.
If you’re interested in checking out more PostNuke’s site is http://www.postnuke.com/. It took me a year to get the courage to take PostNuke on – it’s great, but a bit daunting.

Lookie here! There I was, sitting down editing away trying to get JP Goth 2 into some kind of order and there are people are strolling into the site. Hey guys! Hope you don’t mind the mess!
Anyways, the page is sort of getting together. I’m in love with the PostNuke system ‘coz it’s the closest I’ll get to getting everything I want, but it’s got it’s got a few minor quirks leaving me scratching my head. All in all, good stuff for getting a site moving.
Give me another week to get it stable enough to replace the old site.
Igor
Hey kids, JP’s got Igor strapped to the desk and ordered a new site before the month is out. Why? Because the program used to spit pages for the current JP Goth got fried. Well the computer got fried, and the disk was cracked so could not be re-installed for the recovery, if I have to be honest.
So, there aren’t going to be any updates for the next week or so, but that doesn’t mean Igor’s not working on it.
Feel free to contact us if you notice anything interesting (dimplomat speak for bad).
Well with a dead CD and not much money in the kitty, Igor’s pretty committed to finding a no-cost alternative. Thank the Gods for open source. Unfortunately, having little experience with the new thingamejigs means a lot of trial and error.
Take today for example. A little bit of templating turned into the burnt chicken dinner from Xmas with code spilling out all over the place. It was an innocent, perhaps naive mistake, but the results were devastating. A crisp white design got turned into violet puke in five minutes and restoring it just didn’t work. I want to crawl back to my HTML. However, HTML offers refuge no more, so it’s back to playing with the new code.
Happy new year honey!
A seventy-something was arrested on January 1st after taking to her husband’s head with several sauce bottles. Several condiment containers were found at the scene of the crime. Check the article on Mainichi.
At first I thought it was some kind of psy-powered undead roaming the US landscape, but it turned out to be just a bunch of consumer electronics. From one article in the San Francisco Examiner:
Phone rechargers, TVs, CD players, VCRs, and all those other appliances you plug into the wall and forget were called “energy vampires” Wednesday by state regulators, who voted to make them more efficient.
I’m going back to my Yu-Gi-Oh.
My neat little db disc now rests in pieces, waiting to reach it’s final destination in the garbage pile downstairs. This means that everything except the blog and the board are in a stage of stasis. C’est la vie.
Well, that’s pushed me into quickly rolling out JP Goth version 2 using PostNuke or some similar wares. Well, it would really be pre-beta version 2, but that’s just in line with the original version, which was just some stuff that I scooped together too quickly and slapped online. The big decision is when to release, which relies on lot’s of things including my own laziness, what I’m willing to let slide, what absolutely must be in, how flexible the templating system is, etc. etc. It’ll be a battle of wills between my flustered mind and the program’s laser-focus on doing exactly what it’s told.
Guestimated end result:
Functioning news/general post section
Disfunctioning Journal – it’ll work kind of (Edit: nup, not working)
Events with combining good and funky
Web linx place – should be good in time
Board
Me blog stays out in it’s own world.
When? Sometime this month. I might just throw it straight on as is in a couple of days or spend a week or two “crafting” things.
