Agent Murder hits back for another set of mayhem at the 58th round of Climax Alcoholism. I haven’t heard of this event, but it is not surprising as Roppongi is a place I rarely venture. Since the launch of their second album, I have placed AM at the top of my “bands to see” list regardless of the flavor of the event. They rock!

AM will be joined by Far Eastern Eclipse who have a seriously funked up crisis elektronicka set that gets the blood rushing, retro-pop-rock from Run Jewelry, Feniara 02, Ereki Tai and Taiheiyou Belt. I would put my money on at least four acts scoring well with the punters and worth taking a closer look at.

Being an Australian in Japan during world cup has been getting on my nerves. I like football/soccer quite a lot, but I don’t usually care about who is playing (okay Australia hasn’t been there since god-knows-when), but I like seeing the top teams work their art on the field. Of course this time it is different – Japan AND Australia are in the same group. While I am happy to watch a good game between the two teams, the “excitement” and “anticipation” has actually turned me off a bit. I wonder if Japanese living in Australia might be feeling like this. Anyway….

99% of the population is Japanese with the bulk of the rest coming from Korea and China. This means almost all of the daywalkers are talking football and all of them are blue to the teeth. I didn’t want to go out to a sports bar in Tokyo’s hell’s triangle, so I went back home and study Japanese and feed ferrets and things.

The late-night kanji session began probably around the middle of the first half. Australia was behind one goal, but I had my study quota to fill so headed out to the apartment block’s outdoor area. While sitting on a bench in the dark flipping through the flash cards, I could hear the excitement slowly building as the second half ticked on. That’s cool as I do like the Japanese team – although I think Trousier (ah, Mr. Trousers) had created a more consistent Japanese team than Zico has done (and Zico has stars).

Then the screams came out. I thought the match was over and everyone was jubilant, but then the scream sounded more like cries of despair… Must be a goal to the Australians. Good, good, but I gotta finish the flash cards. Then a couple of minutes later another howl from the apartments – was it a near miss?… surely it couldn’t be another goal. Finally, another yowl. Game over?

After this there was dead silence. No chattering, no cheering, no nothing… This level of silence sounded like the Australians might have actually won. Welly welly welly well. The final nail in the coffin came when dejected menfolk came out carrying their garbage in complete silence. No one carries out garbage after a match like that unless their team lost – the silence sealed it. Somehow the Australians won.

Well, I just finished the kanji, and checked the FIFA site to see that this was indeed true. The Australian miracle – the hapless battlers never gave up and grabbed victory from the jaws of defeat. A typical Australian story, but only because no one talks about the hapless battlers that got nowhere….

Tomorrow at work… I’m not sure which would be worse – the niggles from almost every daywalker I know after a Japan victory over my country’s team, or the niggles from almost every daywalker I know after a Japan defeat by my country’s team. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t. Difficult.

I wonder what kanji I will be looking at when the Australia-Croatia match comes on.

Club Walpurgis[Goth-Glam] Walpurgis is pumping the glam into overdrive in June. TeleGLAM KING “ElectroKlasH on SpEeEEEEd!” includes a live performance from SPEECIES, the new project for legendary Osakan glam-gother Sadie from Jubilee.

Club Walpurgis began as a Goth/Punk club in the 1980s. 18 years after the original club closed down Walpurgis returned as a club event in 2005 with a heavy emphasis on 80s alternative, glam, Gothic, industrial and electroclash. From May 2006 Club Walpurgis will play the third Saturday of the month.

[General Rock - Live] A quick heads up for Nebulae’s next gig. Who is Nebulae? A spiritual heavy rock band according to the flyer, but according to Igor, hot twisted emo-rock unit with balls (see Electrock report). Yes, I like their sound and the performance. I don’t know much about the other bands, but Nebulae’s pretty cool and Honey Delete You Psycho sounds interesting…

Nebulae’s set is on at around 8 p.m.

Urga Shinjuku (May 6, 2006) — Not being up for a whole night of Goth at Tokyo Dark Castle, I opted for the next best thing – Electrock Circus. The name pretty much sums up the event, electro, electronic, rock – sure its not Goth, but with a soundscape like that you will often find an act or two from the dark side of the tracks.

Electrock Circus mixes bands with DJ-style sound artists – ranging from mixing to complete sound construction (or destruction). Personally, I’m a band lover as I like the sounds to have lots of action onstage, but some sound artists unleash a lot of energy and visual impact during their performances. The event keeps a good balance between the two performance styles so everyone should be happy.

Goths were about
A larger than normal showing of night-crawlers was evident tonight for several reasons. 1) Tokyo Dark Castle would start soon after Electrock Circus at nearby Marz, 2) Control Freak who sometimes plays at Midnight Mess was on and 3) there would be a set by master dark industrial unit, Sino – all cool (pity I had to leave before Sino’s set…).

System Error (pix)
System Error’s arrangement was a two-person unit with a femme mixer-sound master in a maid outfit while standing behind her Mac, and an ax-wielding vocalist in SS-style uniform. The sound was generally a nice mix of electronic and digi-rock, although the stage impact was a little light with both members busy multi-tasking the sound production. I liked it, but think a third person is needed to give a stronger impact onstage – just my thoughts.

Nebulae (pix)
A new project and the surprise gem of my night. The band calls their style spiritual heavy rock, but I like to think of it as a twisted hard emo-rock with flash. The vocalist, Ben (also Xenophobia) can ride the songs’ moods with constrained emotion or just letting things rip, and the lead guitarist knows when to get his freak on during the set. This band can blitz you with noise, and pull back for the softer parts. I liked this whole performance. They will be @ Otsuka Red Zone on June 16.

Control Freak (pix)
True to the name, Control Freak had everything in the hands of one man, Matt Redding. It was a power drums’n'bass performance with machines generating the heavy noise backing soundscape. Standing behind his electronic drum pads, the Control Freak did not have much latitude for antics onstage, but he had a strong presence. It was more a hypnotic effect as you watched the man at work and enjoyed the beats. I might not have felt the urge to run up to the stage screaming, but I really liked this performance a lot.

Eingezogen Gestalt (pix)
Veteran band with serious cyber-industrial/eletro-rock sounds. I really got into this two-man set and they obviously knew their craft well. Powerful and in full control, Eingezogen Gestalt are certainly worth checking out. Partway through the set, a curve-ball was thrown out with a girl in a boiler suit and gas mask taking the center stage. That was pretty amazing too (Gasmask girl pix)

Kwik Kick Mummy Lee (pix
I have seen board-based sound creation acts that feel like you’re looking at the DJ-booth in a disco, but KKML is totally dynamic, pulling off the sound-mixer mad-scientist routine (scrunching away and draping himself across the platform), and getting (sometimes literally) into the crowd. You can see the audience just ignite when the set starts and the whole set just rocks. Great sound and totally connects with the audience.

I piked before I could see Sino or Far Eastern Eclipse (the acts I originally came to see), but I was happy to see what I did.

Next Electrock Circus is @ Shinuku Urga on August 26, 2006.

Euthanasie :: Queer ChronicleJune 10 is the official release date for Euthanasie’s mini-album, Queer Chronicle. The album features four tracks from the Tokyo-based sexed-up electronicka unit and goes for 1,000 yen. Samples are available on the Euthanasie’s Web site. Queer Chronicle’s release is the best studio work I have heard from Euthanasie, most closely matching the band’s maturity and sense of style on the live circuit.

And the Press Release is to die for…

[General Live] Veteran Goth rockers Speed-iD have done recent shows at TDC and look to be putting in regular gigs around town. This time Speed-iD appear at Holiday Shinjuku, known more as a visual locale, with 11 other bands. The only other band that I know off the top of my head is Tokyo Yankees who are a great hard rocking pub act that I have caught a number of times at Chop. To save time, I won’t do any research on the other 10 bands as it would take me the rest of the night! Although Yuji Adachi’s a popular guitarist so it could be quite an interesting line up. Good value for those seeking to get a taste of a smorgasbord of bands. Note to Speed-iD freaks: you should start prepping yourselves for the iNDEEP CD release (and associated live devilry) in July!

The site has been redecorated. I would like to believe it is a nice midnight mist theme, but maybe it gives some people migraines or makes their eyes pop out. I can work on a soylent green version if the purple is too much.

The trading of shares in everybody’s favorite mutant-driven eikaiwa stock, Nova, was going mad-ass last week. Why? I wondered as the prices surfed up and down with turnover not seen since… well IPO. The stock got dunked after reporting a 3 billion yen loss for last year (company expectations were a profit of 200 million…). So like a Maronouchi commercial I was screaming “What’s happening?”

The reason for the apparent excitement cam to light on June 5th with Nova’s new expansion plan into East Asia, starting with Taiwan next month. Well, that’s kind of interesting.

I went on to cogitate as to what this would mean for those teachers (sorry, instructors) based in Japan – an opportunity to hop to Taiwan a few “chosen ones” (maybe), no change to the vast majority in the branches, and… remember this is purely speculation from a guy whose business acumen is around zero… possible relocation or a news set up for the Ginga-net facilities in the future. It would make sense from a long-term running-cost perspective, although set-up would be a very heavy whack. However, if you consider the plan is to go East Asian, rather than Japan-only, a central hub where all online-teaching is managed is logical.

There are also possible chances to expand to teaching Japanese as a second language (can’t really do that en masse in Japan) and building up an Asian-language core to their services.

What is an eikaiwa/English conversation company doing on a site dedicated to Goth? I just wanted to see this in the Google finance pages! HooHa!
