The vipers in Japan strike their victims hard. Earlier this month six members of a loan-shark group were arrested on suspician of extracting horrendous interest payments from a woman who, along with her husband and brother, being unable to withstand the loan shark pressure waited on the tracks until a train came along in 2003.

The total figures for the loans in reports vary from 30,000 to 70,000. The total collections made on “interest” are similarly sketchy, from 167,000 to 300,000 yen. Interest rates were charged at over 200 times the legal limit with at least one of the mini loans, where a 15,000 yen loan resulted in the woman being forced to pay 135,000 yen in 43 days.

The alleged harrassment by two of the sharks included phone calls to the household and neighbors, including threats of death if she did not pay.

The tragic end of this was the triple suicide with a note saying they had been hounded by the sharks. Despite the deaths and the note, it was only in March this year, almost two years after the suicide that the six loan sharks were arrested.

The mad cows are coming! The mad cows are coming! While U.S. beef producers are suffering from their own stupid mistake of (exporting parts of dead cows that they agreed not to export), Japan has continued to produce its own crop of BSE infections.

Number 23 was a bull in Hokkaido. I could go on, but do you really care about #23?

The first BSE case in Japan was reported in 2001 and, according to news reports, the country has tested every locally killed cow that’s destined for market. The U.S. is up to three cases in 27 months, but they don’t test every cow, only cows that reach a certain age. And the Australian farmers are breaking open another bottle of plonk.

I think some research group estimated the total number of BSE cased expected to be found by the early 2010′s in Japan at around 100~150 cows peaking around NOW!

Game-addicted Sony lovers must be crying into their instant ramen as Sony has announced that their next-generation PS3 console will be delayed until November this year. I would be crying too, except I have a f***ing Web site to keep chugging along so have no time for zombie hunting on my TV – only at events (woohoo!).

According to Nikkei, the delay was due to the copy protection technology for the PS3′s Blu-ray Disc (that’s one of the two next-generation DVD technologies that will be going hammer and tong at eachother in the months and possibly years ahead) had not been finalized.

Xbox 360 meanwhile is doing well in the U.S. and Europe, but continues to stuggle in Japan.

Agent Murder [Goth/Metal/Industrial Live] Bring out the corpse grinders, because Agent Murder is back with a new event at Shinjuku Urga to celebrate the launch of their second album (title might be Hypocrisy Tower, but I’m not sure)! Get ready to scream for another round of hot core Goth from Awi and the boys along with tactical industrial from 2Bullet, hard-hitting industrial rock from Destruct System, electro-slash Aural Vampire and horror punk metal from Mamono!

** UPDATE!! The title of the new Agent Murder CD is Gizenrou/Earth of Hypocrisy! ** More info on the CD soon… **

Agent Murder combines dread metal, industrial with dark wave layering for an intense, addictive live experience. Bounceable, slammable, screamable, the dark princes of Tokyo’s live Goth scene deliver a great live set and pull together a great mix of bands for their own events (like Murder TV).
Agent Murder on Myspace (Samples!)

2Bullet, AM’s Dee Lee’s second band, has taken concepts of revolution and anti-totalitarianism and mixed them into a speed tactical industrial sound to create an exciting unit that has quickly risen as a prominent in Tokyo and beyond.
2Bullet on Myspace (Samples!)

Destruct System is another great act, offering hot, aggressive underground rock sounds delivered with a smoothness that makes the veterans stand out at any event.

Aural Vampire is a danceable electronicka unit featuring one of the most beautiful ladies on the scene, Exxo Chicka, along with a guy in a Jason mask, Raveman.
Aural Vampire on Myspace (Samples!)

Mamono, is a hard-edged J-punk rock group who rip shit up at events. It is one of the few acts around that I have seen to take the basic J-rock sound and mash, crash and spunk it up into something that pumps!

It is not often I go into this level of detail for an event, but Agent Murder cooks up consistently good live events mixing quality bands from Goth and nearby dark scenes. Murder TV is just such an event. Strong in quality, theme, consistency and energy, Agent Murder’s Murder TV is a live Goth night worth SCREAMING ABOUT.

[J-Epic/Gothic rock and Glam] Blood comes back to Tokyo for a two band event with hot kei-glam band Brand 0. Blood is one of the few bands to successfully marry Japanese rock styles with European Goth themes and aesthetics into their music – and they play well with a large following overseas. Brand 0 is a six-person band (six!) doing some wild glammy sounds and lots of action on stage.

The Cyber crowd is more Goth-loli than most events I scream about – so it may be a little quieter than usual and there may be lots of daypacks lying in the corners. However, the bands are good and you will have a good time. Extra update: Chihiro will be one of the evening’s DJs.

Blood v Brand 0 @ Cyber Ikebukuro
When: Saturday, 18 March
Open: 17:00 :: Start: 18:00

Price 2,500 yen adv. :: 3,000 yen @ door
Live: Blood, Brand 0.
DJs: Chihiro and more.

Back by popular demand, Igor returns to the macabre watch of self-inflicted death in the land of digi-cams and Hello Kitty vibrators. Today’s group suicide took place in a van on a forest road of (shiver) Saitama.

Five men and a woman, all in their 20s took their final journey via the charcoal brickette road. Using little brickette burners to slowly up the carbon monoxide levels and remove the oxygen, the group essentially gassed themselves.

One thing that caught my attention was that only four stoves were in the car and that the woman was wedged between two men in the front seat. Four rather than five? Is it etiquette for men to bring the stoves, logistics with stove placement, or was there something else going on here.

Many of these group suicides tend to be male dominated so the single woman of the group doesn’t seem amiss, but I do wonder sometimes if there may be a final foul play. Something to consider as there was one man who pretended that he wanted to commit suicide with women online, then wound up killing the would be suicidal lady. Charming…

Tokyo Dark Castle #17 once more showed why it is the biggest event in the Japanese Goth scene with more hot bands than you can point a sharp pointy thing at and a large crowd to push things into overdrive. While the sadness of Isola’s passing was not forgotten, the celebration of life was supreme.

Crowd As beautiful as ever. The dress was more style-oriented than fantasy-oriented tonight. There were more people than normal for TDC as it was in part kind of wake for Isola. Cheers to the guys who made it out, said hello, etc. There were quite a few gaijin from various corners of the globe about to boot.

Venue While I like Marz for the funky two-floor layout, it pales compared to Deseo, which had a nice foyer space to talk and more space in general. Marz works very well for smaller events, but once you reach a certain crowd size it just gets uncomfortable – tonight’s TDC was probably a comfortable size for Deseo, but not for Marz space. There was nowhere to escape to and talk (unless you’re “staff”) and if there is a fire, then you’re all going to die! Don’t get me wrong, it is a good mid-size place for events, and would be good for a quiet TDC (Golden Week for example), but regular TDC nights will be a bit of a squeeze. I hope they move the event for Halloween, which shall be most insane!

Music
Up to the usual high standard of TDC, there were no misses. The sounds ranged from the ambient, classical to extra industrial.

Auto-Mod
Slightly longer set with some Hindi-like riffs being added. The new direction works well for the band, bringing out a new accent for the band along with Selia’s addition in back-up vocals. Would I go to a gig just to see them? Goth/metal rock events – for sure.

Speed ID
Liked them a lot and strong Goth sound. I shall keep looking for their outings in future. Would I go to a gig just to see them? Yes – quite an interesting group I want to learn more.

Phantasmagoria
More ambient sounds with two sweet voices plus violin. The singers are very good (as usual) with an operatic style, but the performance seemed lack-luster due to a heavy reliance on taped sounds. I guess I shouldn’t complaint, but with the interlude live acts at previous TDCs (e.g. Vexation and Selia) had more power with straight live performance. Would I go to an event just to see them? Hard call. The voices are great and work well in Goth or ambient scenes, but I just feel they need one more musician…

Destruct System
Hard-assed all the way. Sounds to riot by – and people did with a bit of light moshing and surfing. Would I go to an event just to see them? Oh yeah, as long as I had some Japanese genki drinks (power drinks like Red Bull… except more potent with liquid nicotine and other stuff you wouldn’t believe).

Calmando Qual
Showing that a band from the visual kei scene can rip out some good dark, rocky, gritty sets. Would I go to a gig just to see them? Hmmmmm. Yes, I think they’ve got a good mix of sound and delivery.

Despair
As always the craziest, maddest industrialists around – more mosh-stuff, I just held the stage barrier and tried not to bounce back into the riot behind me! Would I go to an event just to see them? Absolutely! Yes damn it! Yes, yes, yes.

DJs
The addition of Jude, Wakana and Taizo to Chihiro and Violet made the DJ sets as zesty as the bands themselves.

Selia
Armed with his harp, the supremely beautiful sweet soprano provided a last farewell for the night. Smooth as honey the whole way through. Would I go to an event just to see Selia? Absolutely.

Overall, a very good event. In terms of the bands and DJs it was one of the better TDCs. However, venue size was an issue. While it was a sad closure for many, it also re-affirmed that life goes on and should be celebrated.

Once again, it’s time to scream out stuff going on in Goth for the next month.

:: Tokyo Dark Castle adds Despair, Jude and Wakana
TDC#17 just got sexed up with the addition of ultra-industrial Despair, plus Jude and Wakana doing two extra DJ sets. That’s right! Apart from Goth stuff, there is Last Nation, an emo-rock group who were crazy enough to come to Japan in October, and good enough to get a second 10-night Tokyo tour this month.

Salon de Succubus[Fashion Fetish Show] Another last-minute addition for March and it is a totally rocking fashion event with Goth overtones. Featuring DJs Sato.S and Stealth from Torture Garden Japan and fashion shows from Saccubus and Luft Schloss’s M.Died the event looks very promising indeed as a Goth-oriented overnight event. zAkro will be doing modelling at the show and you can thank her for rattling Igor’s cage about Salon de Succubus.

I would give this a total SHOUT OUT, but as we are closing the gates on March events, I will just say… cool people, gorgeous outfits, hot DJs – what more do you want? The event is not dress-coded, but if you go according to the code you can save 1,000 yen on the ticket, so stop being a wallflower and pull out those extras you have hidden at the back of the closet! Enamel, leather, corsets, rubber, bondage, cyber, Gothic, Drag and lingerie are options for the discount rates.

Even if you don’t go, take a gander at Saccubus anyway.

Another late announcement for final addition into the list of events. Harshrealm are an electronicka/mode/Goth band from Fukuoka who have cultivated a real cool sound that brings out the best qualities of the dark-side of the 80′s. The band has impressed me with the quality and scope of the sound (nice and clean to nice and gritty – Myspace samples).

I haven’t had time to check the other bands, but Fukuoka-folk, I would say it is definitely worth checking out for Harshrealm alone. They should still have some sample CD’s available (fingers crossed), but the single or their overseas collaborative work should be (and worth picking up). If you do go, try to catch Finn and say hi – he’ll appreciate it!
